Flu Cases
We are beginning to see flu cases on each campus. The following guidelines will help prevent the spread of flu to other students.
Texas Flu Guidelines & Staying Healthy at School
Flu season occurs each year and spreads easily in school settings. The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) recommends the following steps to help keep students and staff healthy.
How to Prevent the Flu
-
Get a flu vaccine every year (recommended for everyone 6 months and older)
-
Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
-
Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or elbow
-
Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces
-
Get enough sleep, eat healthy foods, and stay hydrated
When Should I Keep My Child at Home?
Please keep your child home from school if they have:
-
A temperature of 100.0°F or higher
-
Flu-like symptoms such as cough, sore throat, body aches, chills, or extreme fatigue
-
Vomiting or diarrhea
-
Symptoms that prevent them from participating in normal school activities
Students may return to school when:
-
They have been fever-free for at least 24 hours without fever-reducing medication
-
Symptoms have improved and they feel well enough to participate in school
Keeping sick children home helps protect classmates, teachers, and staff.
When to Seek Medical Care
Contact your child’s healthcare provider if symptoms worsen, breathing becomes difficult, or fever does not improve.
Working together will help minimize the spread of flu.
